After 7 games of group play and knockout stages, our Central 2006 Girls Academy team returns to the top after a dramatic penalty shootout win against Michigan Fire.
"We started today's game really well. 2-0 up inside 15 minutes would make you think that all nerves would be settled and we would get a little breathing space, but credit to the opposition as they just kept coming at us," said Coach Danny Price.
"2-0 up at halftime, my message to the players was just maintain your good start and don't allow them back into the game by dropping off. Well, we did exactly that and played right into their hands."
"We just didn't play well second half really, but going into OT at 2-2, I was still confident we could get back into a rhythm and start causing them problems again which we did and almost won it late in OT 2. Penalty shootouts it was and we just encouraged the girls to show their quality and allow our GK to make a save. She's such a great shot stopper that we always felt she'd get one and she did. All 5 of our PKs were struck well and with such maturity too. Under that amount of pressure, I was so proud of our players."
With the State Cup title in hand, the team now secures a spot at next summer's Regional Championships.
Congratulations to our 2006 Girls!
